L’été, dans le Midi de la France. Un lac paisible, entouré de collines et de forêts, abrite un lieu de drague clandestin où des hommes, libérés des regards et des jugements, se rencontrent, s’exposent, s’aiment. Franck, solitaire et observateur, y pose sa serviette chaque jour, entre baignades et regards volés. C’est là qu’il croise Henri, un hétéro en pleine remise en question, puis Michel, un nageur au corps sculptural, au charme envoûtant… et au sourire qui cache une ombre.

Un soir, Franck est témoin d’un meurtre. Michel noie son amant, Pascal, sous ses yeux. La peur devrait le submerger. Pourtant, Franck reste. Il se tait. Il cède. Parce que Michel, c’est l’attraction fatale, le désir qui brûle plus fort que la raison. Et Franck, malgré tout, s’y abandonne.

Mon avis

L’Inconnu du Lac, c’est du Guiraudie pur jus : une exploration du désir comme force à la fois sublime et destructrice. Ce film, c’est l’histoire d’un homme qui sait que son attirance pour Michel est une folie, mais qui s’y noie quand même, comme si l’amour et la mort étaient deux faces d’une même pièce.

J’ai adoré ce film. Pas seulement pour son esthétique (ces plans du lac, ces corps en sueur…), mais pour son audace. Guiraudie ne nous épargne rien : ni la violence, ni la passion, ni cette question lancinante – et si le vrai danger, c’était nous-mêmes ?

Ma note : ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5) Parce que L’Inconnu du Lac est rare : un film gay qui ose être à la fois sensuel, angoissant et profondément humain. Si tu ne l’as pas vu, cours. Et si tu l’as déjà vu… tu sais de quoi je parle.

Summer in the South of France. A peaceful lake, surrounded by hills and forests, shelters a clandestine cruising spot where men, free from stares and judgment, meet, reveal themselves, and love. Franck, solitary and observant, lays his towel there every day, between swims and stolen glances. It is there that he meets Henri, a straight man in the midst of a crisis of conscience, and then Michel, a swimmer with a sculpted body, an enchanting charm… and a smile that hides a shadow.

One evening, Franck witnesses a murder. Michel drowns his lover, Pascal, before his very eyes. Fear should overwhelm him. Yet, Franck stays. He remains silent. He gives in. Because Michel represents fatal attraction, a desire that burns stronger than reason. And Franck, despite everything, surrenders to it.

My opinion

Stranger by the Lake is pure Guiraudie: an exploration of desire as a force that is both sublime and destructive. This film tells the story of a man who knows his attraction to Michel is madness, but who drowns in it nonetheless, as if love and death were two sides of the same coin.

I loved this film. Not just for its aesthetics (those shots of the lake, those sweating bodies…), but for its audacity. Guiraudie spares us nothing: neither the violence, nor the passion, nor that haunting question – what if the real danger is ourselves?

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5) Because Stranger by the Lake is rare: a gay film that dares to be sensual, unsettling, and profoundly human all at once. If you haven't seen it, go see it. And if you have... you know what I'm talking about.
